The Haemophilia Society of Singapore (HSS) was pleased to take part in the Haemophilia Patient Education Event hosted by Singapore General Hospital (SGH) over the weekend. The event brought together patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and partners, providing a valuable opportunity to reconnect with the broader haemophilia community.
One particularly meaningful segment of the programme focused on resilience. Through a simple hands-on activity using colourful pipe cleaners, participants explored the idea that resilience is not about being rigid, but about the ability to bend in response to life’s challenges and still recover. The shapes created — from flowers and hearts to everyday comforts like food — reflected the diverse sources of strength and support that help individuals and families cope over time.
HSS also shared updates on how our scope is evolving. While providing financial assistance for treatment remains central to our mission, we are expanding our focus to include advocacy, community-building, and stronger support for caregivers. Examples shared included our advocacy efforts that contributed to prophylactic care being covered under MediShield, community activities such as our film premiere and charity concert, and informal peer support through our WhatsApp groups.
In addition, HSS shared early insights from our recent research into the unmet needs of the haemophilia community, and took the opportunity to engage with members, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and partners throughout the morning.
We thank SGH for hosting this meaningful event, and everyone who participated. Gatherings like these remind us that care goes beyond treatment alone — it is also about connection, shared understanding, and the community that supports each person living with haemophilia.
