HSS held its Annual General Meeting on 20 September 2026, bringing together members, caregivers, volunteers, healthcare professionals and friends of the Society to reflect on the past year and look ahead to the next chapter for HSS.

Reflecting on a year of change

In his President’s Address, Gerald Foo reflected on what has been a particularly active year for HSS, including the Society’s 40th anniversary, the launch of the national study Living with Haemophilia in Singapore, World Haemophilia Day activities, participation in the World Federation of Haemophilia Congress in KL, regional patient organisation exchanges, educational webinars and HSS’ first charity concert.

He highlighted the continued importance of financial assistance, while noting that the needs of the haemophilia community are also evolving as access to treatment improves.

This has shaped HSS’ growing focus across three areas: support, advocacy and community — continuing to provide financial assistance where needed, giving the community a stronger voice, and creating more opportunities for people with haemophilia and their families to connect, learn and support one another.

A healthy financial position

Treasurer Leong Chin presented the Society’s financial report for the year. HSS closed the financial year with a small surplus, putting the Society in a sound position to continue supporting members and its programmes in the year ahead.

Celebrating our young members

The AGM also provided an opportunity to recognise the achievements of our younger members through the Merit Awards and Dulcie Wilson Scholarship Fund.

Congratulations to all four recipients, and we wish them continued success in their studies.

Learning from the global haemophilia community

Gerard Vaz shared his personal reflections from the recent World Federation of Haemophilia Congress in Kuala Lumpur, where Singapore was represented by members of the haemophilia clinical and patient communities.

His sharing provided an opportunity for members to hear about developments and discussions from the wider global haemophilia community, as well as the experiences and challenges faced by patient communities across the region.

Welcoming a new ExCo and President

The AGM also marked the end of Gerald’s time as President of HSS. Gerald expressed his gratitude to the HSS community for the trust placed in him and for the support he received during his time as President. “It has been a privilege to serve this community,” he shared, thanking the HSS ExCo and advisors, healthcare professionals, partners, volunteers, donors, members and caregivers who contribute to the Society.

Melvin Tan was elected as the new President, while Bernie Cahyadi, Gerard Vaz and Jonathan Ong joined the ExCo as new members. Tang Ying Wei, Ng Leong Chin and Alex Tang will continue to serve their existing terms on the ExCo.

We look forward to supporting the new team as HSS continues its work in support, advocacy and community.

Ending the morning together

Following the formal AGM proceedings, members gathered for a casual lunch — an opportunity to catch up, meet new members and spend time together outside the more formal setting of the meeting.

One particularly special moment was welcoming two of our senior members, aged 94 and 88, who travelled to the AGM by public transport and are both doing well. Their presence was a wonderful reminder of what we are ultimately working towards: not simply better treatment, but the opportunity for people with haemophilia to live full lives, remain active in their communities and age well.
